Why Is Fentanyl So Dangerous?

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is almost a hundred times more potent than morphine. It is usually prescribed in the treatment of severe or chronic pain, cancer pain, or as an anesthetic in surgery. However, illicit fentanyl use can be even more addictive. Counterfeit versions and analogs of the drug can be even more potent. And, since they’re unregulated, they can easily cause overdose—even among individuals with a high tolerance of opioids.

Because fentanyl is so potent, it is more dangerous when taken without the supervision of medical professionals. It is easy to underestimate the amount of fentanyl being taken, so overdose and death are real dangers when fentanyl is misused.

Side Effects of Fentanyl

The drug works by binding to the brain’s opioid receptors, reducing the perception of pain and boosting feelings of pleasure and relaxation. It is this effect that makes fentanyl highly addictive and vulnerable to abuse.

Not only that, but the long-term misuse of fentanyl can result in the following adverse side effects:

  • Severe and chronic constipation, which can lead to bowel obstruction
  • Hormonal and reproductive issues
  • Problems breathing while asleep
  • Decreased immune response
  • Heart failure
  • Depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders

Even when fentanyl is taken as prescribed, tolerance and dependence on the drug can develop, and this can lead to an addiction. When someone is taking fentanyl for a legitimate medical concern, it is important to be vigilant and watch out for the signs of addiction.

Signs of Opioid Overdose

Fentanyl was reported to be involved in nearly 80% of overdose deaths in Kentucky in 20231. Narcan, a lifesaving opioid overdose reversal medication, is available at many places in the state2. If you recognize the signs of opioid overdose, administering Narcan can often provide enough time for emergency personnel to arrive and treat the overdose. Signs include:

  • Pinpoint pupils
  • Shallow or difficult breathing
  • Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
  • Limp body and pale, clammy skin

If you or a loved one live with fentanyl addiction, Narcan can save their life. Even if you administer Narcan, you should still call 911 since additional doses may be needed.

Evidence-Based Fentanyl Addiction Treatment in Mount Sterling, KY

At Sterling Crossroads, we are committed to helping Kentuckians find a better way forward. Our outpatient treatment program offers support for residents of Montgomery County and surrounding areas.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Trying to quit fentanyl after long-term or heavy use is challenging. MAT uses FDA-approved medications to curb cravings, which can help prevent relapse. Reducing cravings is effective in promoting long-term recovery and, when used in combination with talk therapy, can be more effective than behavior therapy alone.

Individual Counseling

Working with a licensed therapist can help address the underlying causes of addiction and identify triggers that lead to relapse. Individual counseling can also provide strategies and techniques for managing cravings and developing coping skills for life after treatment.

Group Therapy

Group therapy provides support, understanding, and connection with others who are also recovering from fentanyl addiction. It is an opportunity to share experiences, offer encouragement, and learn from one another’s successes and setbacks.

Assessments and Classes

Addiction has serious impacts on every aspect of life. We offer parenting assessments and classes, drug assessments, and anger management classes. If you have a legal obligation to complete addiction treatment and one of these courses, we can help you fulfill these requirements while helping you inspire positive change in your life.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse is a normal part of recovery, but managing it effectively can make a big difference in the long-term success of recovery. Our program includes relapse prevention strategies to help you recognize and minimize triggers, develop healthy coping skills, and maintain your sobriety for the long haul.
